the code of conduct

A key facet of Munio’s mission is an unswerving commitment to rainforest preservation. Sustainability and responsible business practices are core values, and adherence to the Canopy Wood Code of Conduct and the FSC standards is the foundation of the business.

rainforest protection by munio

About 20% of the world’s total CO2 emissions come from tree felling and deforestation fires (Source: International Panel on Climate Change). This would correspond to the CO2 volume generated from flying eight million people by plane from London to New York every day of the year. The numbers speak for themselves and the consequences are irreversible. Ancient forests maintain the balance of life on Earth, and protecting the rainforest is therefore an urgent task – both if we wish to alter the man-made climate changes threatening our planet, and if we wish to pass on a number of vital resources to future generations.  With sustainable forestry, the forests become an important resource for local communities, as they will be valued and preserved and will regain their original importance as the basis of human existence. If sustainable forestry is not introduced, large expanses of rainforest will be cleared – often illegally - for farming, biofuel production, cattle ranching or by unlawful logging operations. With the world’s ancient forests disappearing, species, cultures and entire ecosystems are forever lost. By supporting sustainable forestry together we can secure the future for humans, animals and nature.

Only by using the forests’ natural resources thoughtfully and respectfully will it be possible to protect them from extinction. Canopy Wood is a further development of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) ecolabel for responsible forestry. The Code of conduct aims to maximize the forests’ economic potential, maintains strict social standards to benefit the people in and around the forests and provides direct protection by only using timber from endangered rainforest areas. Production managed according to the Canopy Wood™ Code of Conduct ensures exclusive use of lesser-known timber species such as Muiracatiara, Coraçao de Negro and Pau Amarelo. This prevents ruthless exploitation of particularly popular timber species, helping to preserve the forest’s biodiversity. In areas of the Amazonia that supply the timber used for the Munio products, only 4-7 trees per hectare may be felled pr. 25-30 years. If the certification of the area is maintained, it is then preserved and left untouched for the next generation. In the long term, this makes the forests CO2 neutral, as their biomass is maintained.
